Bear Watching

Bear Watching

The various migrating salmon species, returning to their natal river estuaries along our 16,000 kilometre coastline, are essential staples for bear and eagle, wolf, otter and seal to name but a few. To witness grizzly sows teaching their cubs the angling skills necessary to sustain them through their lifetimes, or males dueling over territorial fishing rights, will indelibly highlight the memories of your trip.

We observe these animals from the mothership or the inflatable, depending upon locale and circumstances. A respectful distance is maintained, never intruding upon their space. Telescopic lenses / video cameras enhance your trophy photo opportunities.

River estuaries are the locales of choice for the best bear watching, often at the head of jade-tinted fiords, amid snowcapped peaks and cascading waterfalls. These waters are invariably accessible by boat or float plane only. June and September are the most active months but bear sightings are not uncommon throughout the summer.

Bute Inlet, a morning’s cruise north of Desolation Sound, Knight Inlet, a day’s cruise east of Pt. McNeill, and the many river estuaries of the Great Bear Rainforest… the Koeye River in particular…are favourite destinations.
