History and Heritage Preserved in
Nature
The
Mediterranean climate of these islands, dressed in their
springtime palette of cherry blossom pinks and leafy
greens, is a seasonal mood savoured by the fortunate
few. Empty anchorages, sunny marine parks and islands
abloom in wild flowers create a multi-hued carpet for
meadow and forest walks. Arbutus, Garry Oak, Indian Paintbrush,
Blue Camas and Chocolate Dogwood are but a few of the
perennial favourites. Visit vineyards, picturesque villages,
Victoria’s Butchart
Gardens, the world famous murals of Chemainus and petroglyphs
of Nanaimo. The sculptured sandstone formations of Gabriola,
Valdes, Ruxton and DeCourcy Islands showcase wind and
water erosion over the eons.
Two extraordinary island destinations: Wallace Island
and Jedediah Island, formerly private homesteads but
now preserved as marine parks, are favourite overnight
anchorages. Books on each are found in our extensive
coastal library.
